Where Does CBD Come From?
CBD is short for cannabidiol, and it comes from the cannabis plant. However, it’s important to note that there is a big difference between the cannabis plant and the CBD that you might use.
There are two main active compounds in the cannabis plant; CBD and THC. Using liquid solvents like hexane, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol or butane works in much the same way as the carbon dioxide method. This method is cheaper but it does have some downsides. Some solvents carry over impurities from the plants, which give a bitter taste to the final CBD oil products.
Once the CBD oil has been extracted, it may be put through a process called winterisation. This is a method for removing any unwanted substances and purifying the CBD oil. When you see products that are labelled full spectrum CBD, they have not been through this process and they contain all of the extras that come out naturally during the extraction process.
Winterisation is done by freezing the CBD in alcohol and freezing it overnight. It can then be put through a filter to remove all of the impurities. Short Path Distillation
If further purification is desired, short path distillation can be used. Different compounds in CBD oil have different boiling points. By heating the oil to specific temperatures, it is possible to burn off any compounds with a lower boiling point than CBD, creating a purer end product.
